LowLighter Guide
Everything you need to know to get the most out of LowLighter on macOS and Windows.
On this page
Getting Started
LowLighter is an AI overlay that lives on top of your entire screen. Instead of copy-pasting text into ChatGPT or switching tabs, you press a hotkey, drag over anything visible, and get an instant answer right where you are.
- 1
Download & install
Grab the installer for macOS or Windows and run it. The app lives in your system tray / menu bar.
- 2
Create an account
Sign up with your email. You'll get 15 free answers every day with Answer and Summarize modes, no credit card required.
- 3
Set your hotkey
During onboarding, you'll choose a key combination (e.g. Ctrl+1). This becomes your trigger to summon LowLighter from anywhere.
- 4
Press the hotkey
Your screen dims slightly and a hint appears at the top. You're now in selection mode.
- 5
Drag over anything
Click and drag a rectangle around whatever you want analyzed: text, images, charts, code, UI elements, videos, anything visible on screen.
- 6
Get your answer
A floating overlay appears with the AI's response. It stays on top of everything until you dismiss it or press the hotkey again.
Modes
LowLighter has five core modes plus Custom Prompt. You can switch modes from the home screen of the app, where each mode is shown as a card. Answer and Summarize are available on Free and higher plans. Basic unlocks Translate, Explain, and Rewrite for access to all five core modes, while Pro also adds Custom Prompt.
Answer
Free & UpThe default mode. Sends your selection to the AI and returns a direct answer. Best for questions, problems, and general analysis.
Summarize
Free & UpCondenses long selections into concise summaries. Perfect for articles, documentation, emails, and dense content.
Translate
Basic & ProTranslates the selected text into your chosen target language. You can change the target language from within the app. Supports 35+ languages including Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Arabic, Hindi, and all major European languages.
Explain
Basic & ProBreaks down complex content into a clear, step-by-step explanation. Great for code, math, diagrams, and technical material.
Rewrite
Basic & ProRewrites the selected text in a cleaner, more polished way. Useful for improving drafts, emails, essays, or any written content.
Custom Prompt
ProApplies your saved instruction to the selected content. Use it to define a specific task, format, tone, or point of view instead of choosing a fixed mode.
Tip: You can click on any mode card on the home screen to enable or disable it. Disabled modes won't trigger when you press their hotkey, which is useful if you only use a few modes regularly.
Engine Modes
The engine determines how your selection is processed. You can change the engine in the settings page.
Auto
DefaultAutomatically analyzes your selection and routes to the best engine. If the content is pure text, it uses Fast (free). If it contains images, charts, or complex layouts, it uses Vision. This is the recommended setting for most users.
Fast (Text Only)
Uses OCR to extract text from your selection, then sends it to a text-based AI model. Faster and does not count toward your Vision limit. Works best with clean, readable text.
Vision (Accurate)
Sends a screenshot of your selection directly to a vision-capable AI model. Understands images, handwriting, diagrams, charts, code with syntax highlighting, and complex layouts. Each use counts toward your monthly Vision limit.
Note: Fast-engine responses are unlimited on all paid plans. Vision responses have a monthly limit (1,000 on Basic, 2,000 on Pro) that resets each billing cycle.
Quick switch: Press Space + ◀ ▶ to cycle between engines on the fly, no need to open settings.
Hotkeys
Every mode has its own global hotkey. These work from anywhere on your computer, so you don't need to have LowLighter focused.
| Mode | macOS Default | Windows Default |
|---|---|---|
| Answer | Ctrl+1 | Alt+1 |
| Summarize | Ctrl+2 | Alt+2 |
| Explain | Ctrl+3 | Alt+3 |
| Translate | Ctrl+4 | Alt+4 |
| Rewrite | Ctrl+5 | Alt+5 |
| Custom Prompt | Set in Settings | Set in Settings |
Changing a hotkey: Click on the keycap display next to each mode in the settings page. The app will enter recording mode. Press your desired key combination, then release. Press Esc to cancel.
Conflict detection: If you try to assign a hotkey that's already used by another enabled mode, the app will warn you and reject the assignment. Hotkeys from locked modes (modes your plan doesn't include) are automatically freed up when you reassign them.
Overlay & Answer Box
The answer box is the floating panel that appears with the AI's response. It stays on top of all windows until you dismiss it.
Interacting with the answer
- Right-click the answer box to copy the full response text to your clipboard.
- Drag the answer box to reposition it anywhere on screen. The position is remembered.
- Auto-sizing the answer box automatically adjusts its size based on the length and volume of the response text.
- Press Escape or click outside the overlay to dismiss it.
- Auto-dismiss set how long the answer box stays visible before it closes on its own. As low as 3 seconds or set to "Never" to keep it open until you manually close it with Esc or a click.
Customization options
All of these are adjustable in the Overlay card on the settings page:
- Transparency
- Make the answer box semi-transparent so you can see content underneath.
- Opacity
- Control exactly how see-through the overlay is (0–100%).
- Border
- Show or hide the border around the answer box.
- Fade effect
- Smooth fade-in animation when the overlay appears.
- Text color
- Change the color of the answer text.
- Fill color
- Change the background color of the overlay.
- Font size
- Adjustable from the settings page. Make the answer text larger or smaller.
- Font family
- Choose from multiple fonts including Inter, monospace options, and more.
Closing the main window does not close your overlays. Answer, Agent, Meetings, and enabled visual effects can keep running. Open LowLighter again from the macOS menu bar or Windows system tray. Choose Quit LowLighter when you want to stop the background app.
Selection Area
When you press your hotkey and start dragging, the selection area is the rectangle you draw on screen. You can customize how it looks and behaves.
- Screen dim
- Dims the rest of the screen while you're selecting, making it easier to see exactly what you're capturing. Adjustable opacity (0–100%).
- Selection hint
- Shows a small hint at the top of the screen when selection mode is active (e.g., "Drag to select"). Can be toggled off.
- Border color
- The color of the border around your selection rectangle. Default is gold.
- Border transparency
- Make the selection border semi-transparent.
- Fill color & opacity
- The subtle tint inside your selection rectangle. Fully adjustable color and opacity.
Phantom
LowLighter includes a suite of privacy features for users who want to keep their workflow discreet. Phantom Mode makes the app invisible on screen recordings, hides it from the dock/taskbar, and more.
Phantom Mode
ProThe ultimate invisibility suite. When Phantom Mode is active, the entire app shifts to a purple theme to remind you it's on. Includes:
- Content Protection hides LowLighter from screen recordings and screenshots so only you can see it.
- Dock / Taskbar Hiding removes LowLighter from the Dock (macOS) or Taskbar (Windows) so it runs completely from the system tray.
- Minimal Overlay provides faster, less detectable overlay animations with reduced visual footprint.
Every user gets a free 15-minute Phantom invisibility trial. Full Phantom Mode is a Pro exclusive feature.
Stealth Type
ProDelivers the AI response directly into your active text field as natural typing instead of a paste. This means:
- Nothing touches your clipboard
- Appears as if you typed it yourself
- Works with any text field, input box, or document editor
GhostKeys
Basic & ProYour hotkeys stay completely private. Other apps on your system cannot detect when you activate LowLighter, so your workflow remains yours alone.
Agent
ProAgent takes a goal and works through the steps for you. Use it for research, browser work, documents, files, code, or common tasks in desktop apps. You can watch its progress, stop the task at any time, and continue the conversation when you need to adjust the result.
Agent is available on Windows and requires macOS 14 or later on Mac.
Documents and files
Ask Agent to read, fill in, add text to, edit, and save DOCX or PDF files. It can also find, organize, rename, move, and clean up local files.
Research and websites
Compare options, check sources, summarize what matters, fill forms, upload files, and download requested results.
Docs, Slides, and Sheets
Draft and format a Google Doc, build a presentation, or populate, format, and organize a spreadsheet.
Apps and code
Open and work with common desktop apps, inspect code projects, make edits, run tests, and explain the result.
A separate browser for Agent
Website tasks open in an Agent browser window using Chrome or Edge. It has its own LowLighter profile, so Agent does not work inside your personal browser tabs. No extension is required. Its virtual cursor stays inside that browser and does not move your system pointer.
The browser keeps Agent tabs and user-completed sign-ins between turns. If a site asks for a password, passkey, verification code, CAPTCHA, or consent, Agent pauses in the same tab. Finish the private step yourself, return to LowLighter, and ask Agent to continue. Some providers may still refuse an automated browser.
Choose how actions are approved
- Ask before running
- Review an action before Agent reads or changes files, runs a command, or inspects the screen.
- Full access
- Let Agent continue without asking each time. Operating system permission prompts and administrator approval still require you.
Stay in your current app
Summon Agent and type without switching away from the app you are using. Agent may bring its browser or another app forward when the task needs it, but writing your request in the Agent overlay does not take over your current app.
Conversations, instructions, and attachments
Start a new conversation, return to an earlier one, or delete a conversation from the history menu. Saved Instructions tell Agent how you prefer it to work and remain available when its windows close. You can attach images or files with the attachment button or drag them onto the input. Up to two attachments can be prepared with one request.
Phantom for Agent
Pro users can turn on Phantom for Agent, making the Agent overlay invisible to screenshots, recordings, and screen shares while it remains fully visible and interactive for you.
Agent credits
Pro includes 500 Agent credits each month. Included credits are used first. You can add 250 credits for $5, 500 for $10, or 750 for $15 in Agent settings. Purchased credits carry over until used.
Scheduled tasks
On macOS, Agent can save recurring or one-time tasks, run them now, pause them, and remove them. Ask before running still applies. Scheduled tasks are not available in the current Windows build yet.
Agent and an open Agent browser can remain available when the main LowLighter window closes. Reopen LowLighter from the menu bar or system tray to continue. A full Quit LowLighter closes the background app and ends active Agent work.
Meetings
Meetings gives you a live transcript and in-call assistance without making you leave the conversation. You can ask ordinary screen questions when no session is running, or start a listening session when you want transcript-based help.
Ask Assist without starting a session
Type a question in the top field and press the arrow, or use your Assist shortcut. This is ordinary screen-aware help. Meeting AI can also answer basic questions about the Meetings overlay, explain what a control does, and describe what Meetings can do. It does not use a live transcript until you start a session.
Start live listening
Press the waveform button labeled Start Audio Session. Meetings begins listening to the microphone and system audio and builds a live transcript. Starting the session does not open the transcript automatically. The listening status appears in the bottom-left footer, and Transcript or View Transcript opens it.
Use Assist during the call
Press Assist for help based on the newest transcript, your selected Meeting Mode, and your screen when Use screen context is enabled. The answer appears in the Meetings conversation. If no live session is active, Meetings uses General help instead.
Pause or finish
Use the two-bar button next to Done to pause. It changes to a resume control while paused. Done ends the session and saves the completed transcript to History.
Choose a mode and context
Open the four-square button for General, Interview, System Design, Coding Interview, Behavioral Interview, or Custom. The selected mode guides live Assist only. Meeting Controls lets you enable screen context, turn Invisibility on, select the transcription language before starting, and edit global shortcuts.
History and follow-up
History contains finished transcription sessions, not ordinary Assist questions. Search, open, resume, or delete a saved session. New Chat clears the current ordinary Assist conversation without ending a live listening session.
Ask about a completed transcript
Open a completed session and use Ask me anything about this transcript to request notes, feedback, key points, or follow-up answers. LowLighter keeps the chat with that transcript and separates it from live sessions and ordinary Assist chats. Deleting the transcript also deletes its chat.
Reference files
Non-General modes can use editable guidance and up to two PDF, DOCX, TXT, or MD reference files. Files are indexed once and relevant excerpts are used for Assist.
If you are unsure what to press, ask Meeting AI. It can explain how to start or pause listening, where to find the transcript, how to change a shortcut, or what a button does.
Meetings uses a native interface made for macOS and Windows. An active session can keep running when the main LowLighter window is closed. Open LowLighter again from the menu bar or system tray when you want to return.
Offline AI
Basic & ProOffline AI lets LowLighter answer questions entirely on your device with no internet connection. A local AI model is downloaded once and stored locally. After that, every answer is generated on your machine with zero data sent anywhere.
How it works
Go to Settings → Offline AI and download the model. Once downloaded, enable Offline Mode. LowLighter will switch to Fast Engine automatically and route all inference locally. Your Vision quota is not consumed while offline mode is active.
What works offline
The modes included with your plan are available offline. Basic and Pro include all five core modes: Answer, Explain, Summarize, Rewrite, and Translate. Pro also includes Custom Prompt, which applies your saved instruction to text extracted locally from the selection. Only the Fast Engine is available since OCR runs locally.
What still needs internet
Auto Engine and Vision Engine require a cloud connection. If you need to process images, diagrams, handwriting, or math notation, turn offline mode off and use Auto or Vision.
Offline AI is available on Basic and Pro plans. The model requires a one-time download.
Aesthetics

Tips & Tricks
Right-click to copy
After the AI responds, right-click anywhere on the answer overlay to instantly copy the full response to your clipboard.
Disable modes you don't use
Click on any mode card on the home screen to toggle it off. This frees up the hotkey and prevents accidental triggers. You can re-enable it anytime.
Use Auto engine for best results
The Auto engine intelligently routes between Fast and Vision based on what you select. It saves your Vision responses for content that actually needs them.
Use Stealth Type for privacy
Enable Stealth Type to deliver the AI response directly into your text field as natural typing, keeping your clipboard clean.
Select just what you need
Smaller, focused selections give better answers. Instead of selecting an entire page, drag over just the paragraph or image you need help with.
Make the overlay transparent
If you want to keep reading while the answer is visible, turn on overlay transparency and lower the opacity. The answer stays readable while the content behind it shows through.
Vision-heavy content? Consider Pro
If you frequently work with images, diagrams, or complex layouts, Pro gives you 2,000 Vision responses per month (twice the Basic limit), higher-thinking models, Agent computer use, maximum Meeting Assistant usage, Phantom invisibility, and Custom Prompt.
Check your usage from the Account page
The Account page in the app shows a usage graph of your Vision and Fast responses for the current billing period, plus stats like total requests, resets, and remaining Vision responses.
